Many years ago, I answered the phone and heard a croaking, world-weary voice say, “Uh, this is Harold Teeter, the Fresh Shrimp Man.” Harold’s halting recorded telephone sales pitch went on for a couple of minutes, announcing that he had recently arrived from the gulf coast with a truckload of fresh shrimp, and giving the location and times he’d have his road-side shrimp stand set up. That one ephemeral call from Harold had a big influence on me. For many months, I recorded imagined episodes from Harold’s life, delivered in character, as the outgoing messages on my answering machine. Sometimes I’d come home to find that dozens of people had called to listen to the latest installment of Harold’s adventures. Now, through the miracle of the Internets, Harold is back.
